Polskie streszczenie: bardzo łatwo jest być weganinem w Malawi. Na każdym rogu można nabyć tanie warzywa, owoce i (o dziwo) kotlety sojowe. W niemal każdej lokalnej restauracji można zamówić sycące danie złożone z fasoli, kukurydzianej papki i warzyw w cenie 5 zł. W Mzuzu można kupić nawet mleko sojowe.
Malawi is a good country for vegans. If you like to eat vegan, here is a sample of food you can easily find anywhere (prices in USD):
- plenty of cheap fruits. Those I can name: bananas (2-8 cents each), huge avocados, tangerines, oranges, apples (25-40 cents each)
- groundnuts (fresh - in May; otherwise cooked or roasted)
- Malawian staple food: nsima (thick maize porridge) + beans + veggies. You can find it at all restaurants serving Malawian food. Price at restaurants for locals: $1,3. As alternative to nsima you can order the meal with rice or french fries (called chips here)
- if you preare your meals yourself, you can cheaply buy rice, potatoes, beans, peas, and soya pieces from vendors on the markets and on the streets
- chick pea, lentils and soya beans are also available (and probably inexpensive too)
- cookies - in supermarkets (and some shops) often you can find a choice of one or two packaged cookies that don't contain milk solids
- chips: in Malawi most of them don't contain milk
- margerine: the blue one doesn't seem to contain milk
Vegan Mzuzu:
- soy Milk Alpro is to be found at Chipiku store ($3,7 per litre)
- pizza: you can order a vegetarian pizza without cheese
at Foodland
- vegan "meatballs", "meat" pies and possibly other snacks can be ordered at Mrs Gondwe (mobile phones +265 888 410 023, +265 999 410 023) - an excellent choice (also for non-vegans!) if you're going for a trip to national parks like Vwaza or Nyika, where you must take all your food with you. Mrs Gondwe does't have a restaurant (yet). Food can be ordered in advance and you can arrange when and where it can be picked up (or possibly delivered to you)
